Starting Off - Toms' First Match

    Saturday 26th Sep 2009

Tom's day finally arrived and we spent an hour at home going through all his tackle, rigs, rods and everything he thought he needed with a few reminders from me. He was pretty nervous, which was quite reasonable considering the field of anglers he was just about to meet and fish with - this included a fully start studded field of Home International Anglers, not a bad starter in your Shore Match Fishing career!
First stop was Dorset Fishing Rods, where Richard handed us a custom built Conifers Bare Bones Bass rod. Given to Moonfleet Angling to use for coaching sessions. Massive thanks to Richard!

Starting Off - Tom Houlton, The Conger Angler !

Tom and Ian headed off for Blue Anchor in search of Conger on Saturday and opted for the beach itself as apposed to the wall. There would be little for Tom to gain fishing a wall and possibly having to hand line a conger up. Tom Set up for both Ian and himself and as we had 2 hours to kill before fishing started we went through some rigs. Tom was pretty much confident with what he would need to use for bait, and the rigs needed for the day. He started off with a simple 3 hook flapper on size 6 hooks and went for pin whiting.

Starting Off - Tom Houlton Sea Angler !

Anyone who has read the Llangennith thread in the Shoreangler Forum regarding my boy and his heroics will have read that he is an utter novice. Following the events of that day he has decided that fishing is a pretty exciting sport, and as such is now pestering the life out of me for info, tactics and trips to the beach. It seems by my son, Tom, is Starting Off his Shore Angling and I've set him a target - Fish a match, but not just any match, the England Junior Squad Fundraiser.

The England Junior squad fundraiser is on 26th Sep. It is going to be fished by some pretty impressive anglers from the International and Regional Leagues plus some very handy local Club Anglers. It should prove to be a good experience for Tom and you can follow the progress in this feature. Please read on:
