    Matata Snapper

    Arrived at 3.30 to find a dying S/W wind and a beach that again had changed, the deeper water was towards the eastern end of the beach, at least the water I could reach from the top of the bank of sand that had built up. (Image Below).


    This would hopefully put me away from any long liners. So engaged the diff lock and into second and off down the track. The low swell made picking chnages difficult but it was low tide so looked like the beach in front of me was emptying out to my left so one rod went there the other to the right where the channel flowed into.

    It's not all Good !

    Mark wanted to point out that fishing in New Zealand has it's down points apart from targeting Snapper, Shark, Blue Moki and Trevally from the Shore in some of the most breath taking sceenery in the world. . . Here's a few things to overcome.

    Bay of Plenty

    Spent the last two weeks targetting Bay of Plenty Snapper. They feed from late August through to mid November, putting on body fat before the water temperature reaches 18 degrees C which triggers spawning.

    The fish we target this time of the year are in the 6 to 10lb class, usually at night as the fish move inshore to feed on shell or the paddle crabs that begin to appear as the water warms. The Eastern Bay of Plenty beaches have excellent access with a main road running parrallel almost continously for some 40 kms, and where the road leaves the beach there are tracks which, with a four wheel drive mean you can get to the beach via the tracks at the back of the sand dunes. ...
