    Natural England Goes Sea Angling

Natural England’s Marine Director, James Marsden, took a crash course in sea angling on July 28th when he took to the Blackwater estuary in Essex for a day’s charter boat fishing with the Angling Trust.

Mr Marsden, who is responsible for overseeing the delivery of the Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs) project in England, joined a party of anglers and representatives on the regional MCZ projects in order to understand recreational sea angling better and the concerns that many anglers have over the MCZ process.

CALLS FOR PROTECTION OF FISH STOCKS GROW LOUDER AS POPULARITY OF SEA ANGLING SOARS

Sea angling is a fast growing pastime in England and Wales with 1.9 million men, women and children over 12 taking part last year.

In a report out this week, the Environment Agency says this is a rise of 26 per cent since the Government’s Drew Report in 2003 when the figure was 1.5 million including children under 12.

In the past two years 2.8 million people over 12 said they had been sea fishing.

The Angling Trust recently launched a campaign strategy to highlight concerns of Britain's 3 million anglers in the run-up to the General Election

Here's a brief extract that 'caught' the eye!

    3.1. Restore Fish Stocks

A succession of governments should hang their heads in shame for the fact that we no longer have „plenty more fish in the sea‟. Many fish which were once regarded as a staple food have become rare and endangered as a result of generations of greedy overfishing, pollution and habitat destruction.

Survey reveals WHY people go angling……and it’s not for the biggest fish

A national angling survey has revealed that the main reason millions of anglers go fishing in the UK is not to net a record fish but to escape crowds, de-stress and experience nature.

Of the thousands of anglers who took part in the survey, approximately 90% said that experiencing nature and scenery was important, very important or extremely important to them; while 88% rated escaping crowds and noise as an important, very important or extremely important motivation. These two results position angling as an antidote to the stresses of modern life and a contributor to personal well being.

A little Bird has reported there to be a few BIG Cod showing to Charter and Private boats out of Newport & Cardiff and further round the South Wales Coast Line. It seems the recent cold snap has drawn a few fish inshore, some are reported to have gone to 25lb+

    Can anyone confirm this?
